RNCM Festival of brass 2009

Close on the heels of Skegness came a trip to Manchester to the Royal Northern College of Music. This was a very welcome invitation, our first since 1993.The theme of the festival being a celebration of the music of Gilbert Vinter. The programme selected for us by Paul Hindmarsh was both varied and demanding. In honour of the festival theme we began with:

Symphony of Marches – Gilbert Vinter.
This is a work comprising three movements each exploring a different aspect of the “March” form; a bold first section, a funereal second, and a playful last movement. We followed this with a range of pieces which show cased the full potential of our band, a talented group of musicians.

Elegy – Kernneth Hesketh
One long melodic line which develops to a climax and then dissipates gently away; ending as it started with the long theme reappearing. Desford are proud to have given this work its world premiere.

Pageantry – Herbert Howells
A timeless classic from this master composer and a stalwart of the band’s repertoire.

Jebel – James MacMillan
This highly descriptive work was written for the Jordan Hill School in Glasgow, (Jebel being Arabic for hill). It is a rhythmic mixture of percussion and brass fanfares which build continually in volume and intensity to an inevitable, stunning climax.

Concerto Grosso – Gilbert Vinter
Featuring a quartet within a band this collection of light chamber music gave a complete change of sound and style, delivered with great panache by the players.

Harrison’s Dream –Peter Graham
A wonderful challenge to play and a great showcase for the bands talents; it was delight to have the opportunity to perform the work on the concert platform following it’s earlier outing at Butlins.

A Letter from Home – Pat Matheny
A glorious simple tune gently bringing the show to an end.

We had a great time putting this serious music together knowing that the performance would be well attended and also recorded by the BBC. We were very pleased with our efforts and look forward to being involved in future festivals. We hope the wait is not too long before we get the chance to share our musicianship in such a wonderful musical arena.
